Thailand is set to cut the duration for visa-free stays for tourists from 60 days to 30 days. This change is part of an effort to address concerns over foreign visitors engaging in illegal activities in the country. Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong stated that the reduction has been agreed upon by several government ministries. Since July 2024, passport holders from 93 countries have been able to enter Thailand without a visa for longer stays. The decision comes after complaints from the Association of Thai Travel Agents about foreigners working unlawfully in Thailand. The Thai Hotels Association also noted that long visa-free periods may contribute to illegal rentals of condominium units to foreign guests. Tourism is an important part of Thailand's economy, which is the second largest in Southeast Asia. The government aims to attract over 40 million foreign tourists in 2025, aiming for a record high. So far this year, from January to March 9, Thailand has welcomed 7.66 million foreign tourists, reflecting a 4.4% increase compared to the previous year.
