Thailand to visit China regarding Uygur deportees' welfare
scmp.com —
Thailand is sending a delegation to China to check on the welfare of 40 Uygurs it recently deported. The visit, led by Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, will take place from March 18-20 in Kashi city, Xinjiang. This move comes after the U.S. imposed travel sanctions on Thai officials involved in the deportation. The U.S. aims to counter China's pressure on countries to return Uygurs and others. Thailand previously described the deportation as the "best solution" to avoid issues with Beijing. The country has strengthened ties with China, which is now its largest trade partner.
