Thanal housing project in Muttathara awaits technical approval
The Thanal housing project in Thiruvananthapuram is currently delayed. This project aims to provide new homes for residents of Vikalanga Colony in Muttathara. The city corporation has not yet approved the necessary technical sanction for construction, which has stalled progress. The Uralungal Labour Construction Cooperative Society (ULCCS) was given the contract last year. They submitted a revised project estimate two months ago, stating that the total cost would exceed the initial estimate of Rs 20 crore. However, without technical approval, construction cannot start. Currently, 99 families live in the colony under challenging conditions. MR Gopan, the opposition leader, criticized the city corporation for its inefficiency and lack of progress. He mentioned that many residents are struggling and that the delay has led to increased costs. The opposition plans to raise these issues at the next council meeting. An ULCCS official explained that construction, including the foundation work, can only begin after receiving the technical approval. The cost may increase as a result of the delays. Shajida Nazar, who chairs the development committee, said that a meeting will be held soon to discuss the estimate. She assured that technical sanction will be granted before the end of March. The project has faced previous delays due to complaints from nearby residents and required approvals from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This certification was obtained last year, leading to adjustments in building plans from three stories to two due to height restrictions. The Thanal housing project will occupy two acres and is designed to house 136 families, with each apartment measuring 550 square feet. A soil test has already been completed at the site. Once construction begins, the project is expected to be finished within 18 months. Vikalanga Colony has existed for around 48 years, primarily housing individuals with disabilities.
