Thanjavur women demand total alcohol prohibition in Tamil Nadu

Members of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) held a demonstration in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday. They called for total prohibition of alcohol in the state. The women’s wing of the Communist Party of India led the protest, chanting slogans against the sale of liquor. The federation demanded strict action against those involved in crimes against women. They urged the Tamil Nadu government to gradually close down all retail wine outlets operated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation. Additionally, the NFIW called for more financial support for women. They asked for micro-credits to help women start their own businesses. They also requested the issuance of 'smart cards' for women working in street vending. The demonstration included a march from the AITUC office near the Old Bus Stand to the Head Post Office, where they held their rally.
