Tharoor praises India's unique mediation role in conflict
Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP, has praised India's current approach to the Russia-Ukraine war. He admitted he initially misjudged the country's position and expressed that it now has a chance to help achieve lasting peace. Tharoor highlighted India’s relationships with both Ukraine and Russia as a unique advantage in mediation efforts. During an event in Delhi, Tharoor reflected on his past criticism of India's response when the war began in February 2022. He felt he had "an egg on his face" for opposing the government's stance at that time, which he viewed as a violation of international norms. He mentioned that his call for India to condemn Russia's actions was based on principles of sovereignty and the use of force in international disputes. Tharoor emphasized that, three years later, India's diplomatic position allows Prime Minister Modi to engage with both the Ukrainian and Russian leaders. He stated that this ability places India in a unique situation to contribute to peace efforts, something few other countries can do. He also discussed the possibility of India sending peacekeepers if a consensus is reached between Russia and Ukraine. Tharoor noted that Russia does not accept NATO peacekeepers, which could open the door for Indian troops. Though he clarified he cannot speak for the government as a member of the opposition, he expressed that there may be broader acceptance for this idea compared to past requests, such as in Iraq. Tharoor concluded by reminding everyone of India's strong track record in global peacekeeping, having participated in over 49 missions.
