"The Mandalorian and Grogu" has lowest Star Wars budget

A new Star Wars movie titled The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to hit theaters in 2026. This film marks the return of Star Wars to the big screen after seven years. It will also be the least expensive Star Wars production since Disney acquired Lucasfilm. The California Film Commission revealed that the budget for The Mandalorian and Grogu is just over $166 million. While this amount is significant, it is considered low compared to other recent blockbuster films. For example, Deadpool and Wolverine each cost around $200 million. The previous Star Wars movies have been more expensive as well. Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian and Grogu has a budget similar to the older prequel films. The last Star Wars movie to cost less was Revenge of the Sith in 2005, which had a budget of $113 million. The lower budget suggests this film may not be as grand in scale as the sequels or other recent entries like Rogue One. This upcoming movie will continue the story from the popular Disney Plus series. After the Hollywood strikes in 2023, Disney chose to bring the series to theaters. The film features Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda, and Pedro Pascal in the lead role. The script was written by Favreau and Dave Filoni. The cast includes actors Jeremy Allen White, Jonny Coyne, and Sigourney Weaver along with Pascal. The story will involve Jabba the Hutt’s crime syndicate, with White playing Jabba's son, Rotta. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in theaters on July 26, 2026. Before that, fans can look forward to Andor season 2, which premieres on Disney Plus on April 22, 2025.
