Thiruvananthapuram council prioritizes drug abuse education initiatives
In Thiruvananthapuram, the city council has come together to confront the serious issue of drug abuse. During a special meeting, they approved a new action plan to tackle this growing problem. Mayor Arya Rajendran highlighted the importance of educating parents and the community about the changes in behavior that can result from drug use. The mayor noted that many people do not recognize narcotics when they see them. To address this, the city plans to hold awareness programs at the ward level, with help from local police and excise departments. The council's decision shows a strong commitment to fighting drug abuse, despite political differences. Deputy Mayor PK Raju pointed out that much of the drugs entering Kerala come from other states. He called for a nationwide strategy to combat drug trafficking and announced plans to send a letter to the Prime Minister asking for a special law on this issue. BJP councillor P Ashok Kumar urged for inspections at late-night restaurants and upscale hotels where drug activity might occur. Another BJP councillor, VG Girikumar, shared that around 70% of drug addicts in Kerala are aged 10 to 15. He stressed the need to focus awareness efforts on students. Congress leader Mary Pushpam emphasized that initiatives should begin at the household level.
