Farmers in Thoothukudi district are asking local authorities for training on how to extract neera, a sweet sap from coconut trees. They made this request during a grievance redress meeting at the Collectorate on Thursday, led by Collector K. Elambahavath. The farmers expressed several concerns during the meeting. They want full compensation for their shallot and cotton crops under the 2023-2024 crop insurance scheme. This issue has been raised in previous meetings as well. They are also seeking immediate relief for crops that were damaged by the 2024 monsoon rains. In addition to these demands, farmers are calling for the establishment of a maize procurement center in Mela Sekkarakudi. They want an investigation into fertilizer smuggling in Kovilpatti and strict action against those involved. Also, they highlighted the need for better practices in coconut farming. Farmers also discussed their issues with the Kurumbur Primary Agriculture Cooperative Bank, which they allege has engaged in fraudulent activities. They want their savings and pledged jewelry returned. They are pushing for the removal of the invasive plant Prosopis Juliflora from the Tamirabharani river and the protection of water rights in the Karumeni river. In response, Mr. Elambahavath assured farmers that compensation for shallots and cotton has already been credited to many accounts. Payments are pending in just two areas, and those will be processed soon. He also mentioned that the establishment of a maize procurement center will be reviewed and that the Water Resource Department will manage irrigation tanks effectively. Investigations into fertilizer smuggling are ongoing, and the Collector promised necessary action will be taken. He confirmed that training for neera extraction will be provided through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission. Lastly, he mentioned that efforts to remove Prosopis Juliflora from the Tamirabharani river would be completed shortly.
