Thoothukudi promotes TB awareness and early detection efforts
In Thoothukudi, Collector K. Elambahavath emphasized the importance of Tuberculosis (TB) awareness and early detection at an event marking World TB Day. He reported that in 2024, over 58,000 people were screened for TB in the district. Out of those, 1,971 were diagnosed, and 87% have been successfully treated. The National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) is working to improve TB control. New testing methods, including Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) laboratories, have been set up at several hospitals. These labs provide same-day results to help in the rapid detection of the disease. The Collector highlighted the need for coordinated treatment, especially since TB and HIV often occur together. Currently, 37 individuals are being treated for both conditions. He called on private hospitals and pharmacies to report TB cases, as the government aims to lower mortality rates from the disease. Elambahavath mentioned a mobile X-ray unit introduced by the Chief Minister to reach remote areas and assist in TB detection. He also urged the public to understand TB symptoms and work together to eliminate it from the district. Several officials were present at the awareness program, supporting the message of collective action against TB.
