Thousands evacuate as Mt. Kanlaon erupts in the Philippines
Thousands of residents near Mt. Kanlaon have begun evacuating after the volcano erupted on December 9, causing heavy ashfall and strong sulfur fumes. An urgent evacuation order affects about 87,000 people, particularly in La Castellana, where 46,900 are in danger zones. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology raised the alert level from 2 to 3, indicating a magmatic eruption may lead to further explosive activity. The eruption generated a plume reaching 4,000 meters and was accompanied by loud explosions and pyroclastic flows. Local officials have canceled classes and ordered evacuations in several areas affected by ashfall. The Civil Aviation Authority has restricted flights near the volcano due to potential hazards. Flight operations at the nearest airport remain normal for now.
