Thousands of Syrian refugees return home after Assad's overthrow by rebels
Thousands of Syrian refugees returned home following the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad. Many celebrated the end of his rule, while others anxiously awaited news of loved ones imprisoned during the civil war. Turkey has increased the number of daily returns from 3,000 to between 15,000 and 20,000. It plans to open a sixth crossing point along its border with Syria. The rebel group that toppled Assad is forming a new government. They have pledged to investigate officials responsible for human rights abuses, as the UN prepares to gather evidence for potential war crime prosecutions.
