Three arrested for cheating Chennai woman of ₹26.5 lakh

Three people have been arrested in Chennai for cheating a woman out of Rs 26.5 lakh in cash and gold. The group includes two women and one man. They befriended the victim, Yamini, in 2013 and took money under false pretenses. Between 2013 and 2020, Yamini gave them a total of Rs 26.5 lakh and 17 sovereigns of gold jewelry. After the COVID-19 pandemic, she asked them to return the items. They ignored her requests and avoided contact. When local police initially did not take her complaint seriously, Yamini sought help from the court. The court instructed the police to investigate her case. Following this, police arrested the three suspects: S Sumathi, M Rajadurai, and A Malar. They were brought before a magistrate court and have been placed in judicial custody. The police confirmed that the trio had intentionally deceived Yamini and had no plans to return the money or the gold.
