Three men have been sentenced for their involvement in violent riots in Southport last year. The riots occurred on July 30, 2024, after the tragic murders of three children. Misinformation about the attacker sparked unrest, leading to an attack on a mosque and a police van being set on fire. The men were sentenced in Liverpool Crown Court. Thomas Birchmore, 31, was seen kicking a police vehicle and received a two-year prison sentence. Gavin O'Connor, 46, threw missiles at police and was sentenced to two years and eight months. Ryan Williams, 30, threw bricks at officers and the mosque and received a sentence of one year and ten months. The police are continuing their investigation into the riots. A 35-year-old man from Wigan was arrested at Manchester Airport for throwing missiles during the unrest. He has been released on bail while inquiries continue. Detective Inspector Paula Jones reported that a total of 237 years of sentences have been imposed on 128 people related to the riots.
