Three minors arrested in deadly New Mexico hit-and-run
Authorities in New Mexico have arrested a 15-year-old boy linked to a hit-and-run that killed a cyclist last year. This arrest comes after two other minors, aged 11 and 13, were detained earlier this week. The incident took place in Albuquerque on May 29, 2024. Scott Dwight Habermehl, a 63-year-old physicist, was riding his bike to work when a stolen car struck him. Police say the three boys intentionally crashed into him. Investigators found cellphone video of the crash shared on social media. In the video, the 13-year-old is seen driving, while the 11-year-old holds a gun. The 15-year-old is in the backseat. The video captures the driver discussing hitting the cyclist, followed by the crash itself. Both the 13-year-old and the 15-year-old face charges of first-degree murder. A juvenile court judge decided to keep the 13-year-old in custody. The 11-year-old, who cannot be detained because of his age, will also face murder charges. New Mexico law allows children under 12 to be charged with serious crimes but prevents their detention in juvenile facilities.
