Three private universities proposed in Assam

The Assam government has introduced bills to establish three new private universities. The education minister, Ranoj Pegu, presented the proposals in the Assembly on Friday. One of the universities, called EdTech Skills University, will be located in Tinsukia. It aims to improve learning and academic research in line with the New Education Policy. This university is supported by the World Education Mission. The other two proposed universities are Swami Vivekanand University and Maa Kamakhya University. Swami Vivekanand University will have its main campus in Chirang district and facilities in Kokrajhar. It is backed by the Social Action and Research Foundation. Maa Kamakhya University will be based in Sipajhar and is sponsored by Gabeshona Eduversity Foundation. Additionally, the government introduced the Assam Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2025. This bill prohibits universities from engaging in any activities related to the religious conversion of students or staff members.
