The Thunder Bay Public Library (TBPL) is set to undergo a significant renovation at the Waverley Resource Library in Port Arthur. This project comes in response to a growing demand for children's programming, with over 10,000 more children attending programs compared to last year. TBPL CEO Richard Togman emphasized the need for the changes. "All of our programs for kids are usually booked up weeks in advance," he said, indicating that the current offerings are not enough to meet community needs. The renovation plans include creating a 12,000 square-foot Children's Library in the building's lower level. The project is facilitated by the upcoming departure of an organization that currently occupies space in the library. Structural improvements will be made during the renovations to address issues like foundation concerns that could affect the children’s area. With the extra space, the library plans to add more programming, seating, community meeting rooms, and play areas. Togman explained that with rising costs of living, many families look to the library for free educational programs and materials, which highlights its role as a community hub. The renovation is currently in the design and costing phase, with funding coming from the City of Thunder Bay and the Friends of the Thunder Bay Public Library. Fran Duke, the president of the Friends group, expressed strong support for the new Children's Library, calling it a much-needed resource for the community. Renovations are expected to begin in the fall or winter. The work will be completed in phases to ensure the library remains open throughout the process. Togman reminded the public of the diverse services the library offers, including reading materials and programming, which are vital during economically challenging times.
