Tingog urges ASEAN cooperation to end human trafficking
The Philippine government is urging stronger cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to fight human trafficking. This call comes as 187 Filipino victims are set to be repatriated from Myanmar. This information was shared by Tingog party-list on Wednesday. Tingog Representative Jude Acidre emphasized the need for a united approach to tackle human trafficking, which has become a serious issue in the region. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs announced plans to bring home these victims soon, with help from Myanmar and Thai authorities. Acidre stressed that regional collaboration is essential to hold traffickers accountable. He hopes this repatriation will inspire all involved to renew their commitment to combat human trafficking effectively. He also highlighted that while 187 Filipinos are being rescued, there are still 62 more individuals trapped in Myanmar, stressing the urgent need to address this crisis. During a Senate hearing, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega confirmed that the victims would cross into Thailand through a specific bridge soon. Acidre stated that Tingog will continue advocating for the rights and welfare of Filipino workers, particularly those at risk of trafficking. He concluded by expressing a vision for a future where human trafficking is eradicated, stressing the need for preventive measures and better public awareness campaigns to protect vulnerable individuals.
