Tiruchi Corporation hires agencies to manage stray cattle
Tiruchi Corporation is taking steps to control the problem of stray cattle in the city. They plan to hire two new private agencies responsible for impounding these animals. One agency will work in Zones II, III, and IV, while the other will operate in Zones I and V, both during the day and at night. Currently, the civic body uses three agencies for this task. These agencies have special vehicles to safely lift and transport the stray cattle to shelters. On average, they round up about 12 animals each day. This month alone, 34 stray cattle were captured, leading to a total fine of ₹85,000 imposed on their owners. The operation mainly focuses on major roads and market areas to prevent traffic issues. So far, a total of 701 animals have been impounded since the program began in November 2022. The authorities have collected ₹19.88 lakh from fines, and 51 unclaimed cattle have been auctioned for ₹3.45 lakh. To make the process easier for cattle owners, the Tiruchi Corporation has lowered the penalty fees. The fine has been reduced to ₹2,500 for each stray animal. Previously, the fines were higher, at ₹5,000 for cows and horses. The corporation aims to auction impounded cattle within two weeks.
