thehindu.com

The authorities at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi plan to install new solar power plants to save on electricity costs. The project will cost ₹2 crore and is expected to be completed by May 2026. These new solar plants will have a capacity of 200 kW. They will be installed on several hospital buildings, including the Super Speciality and Obstetrics/Gynaecology units. Other areas with enough sunlight will also be used. The hospital currently spends around ₹32 lakh on electricity each month. The new solar plants could help reduce this amount significantly. The money saved on electricity will be used to buy medicines and improve healthcare services. S. Kumaravel, the Dean of the hospital, emphasized the goal of enhancing patient services. Currently, some smaller solar plants generating 33 kW are already in use at the KAPV Medical College hostels. These plants save about ₹2 lakh each month on their electricity bills.
