Tiruppur farmers boycott meeting over livestock compensation issues
Farmers in the Kangayam-Vellakovil area of Tiruppur district have decided to boycott an upcoming Grama Sabha meeting on March 23. They are unhappy with the government's failure to provide compensation for sheep and goats that have been killed by street dogs. During a recent Assembly discussion, the issue of compensation was raised, but no solution was reached. Farmers are frustrated with the uncertainty surrounding payments. They highlight the remarks made by local officials, who mentioned that legal complications are hindering efforts to control the street dog population through sterilization. Minister K.N. Nehru explained that the Supreme Court ruling complicates how local authorities can manage street dogs. He indicated that changes to the law may need to come from the Parliament. Another minister, S. Muthusamy, acknowledged the farmers’ struggles but emphasized the need for a long-term solution. In response to their grievances, farmers are rallying support from others in the Erode, Namakkal, and Karur districts for their boycott. They have previously protested at Grama Sabha meetings, demanding action on compensation and the management of dog populations. Farmers feel let down by promises made by government officials regarding compensation. They believe they have no choice but to continue their protests until their issues are addressed.
