Tiruppur farmers suspend protests over livestock compensation issues
Farmers in Tiruppur are unhappy with the government's compensation for livestock killed by street dogs but have decided to pause their protests for now. The state announced that farmers will receive ₹6,000 for each goat or sheep, even though the market value is ₹13,000. For poultry, farmers will get ₹200 per bird, while compensation for cows or buffaloes is set at ₹37,500. P. Velusamy, a local farmer leader, expressed disappointment over the compensation amounts. He noted that while the new rates are better than those offered during natural disasters, they still do not adequately support the affected farmers. In the past, the compensation for goats and sheep was only ₹4,000, and chicken was just ₹100. Despite their dissatisfaction, Velusamy mentioned that farmers will review the government's upcoming order before deciding on further actions. He also thanked local MLAs and ministers for raising the issue in the Assembly, as well as the Tiruppur district administration for addressing the plight of livestock farmers.
