Tokyo James showcases Fall 2025 collection in Lagos
Tokyo James presented his Fall 2025 collection on March 3 during Milan Fashion Week, but in a unique twist, the show took place in Lagos, Nigeria. This decision celebrated the 10th anniversary of his fashion label. James, who is of Nigerian descent, highlighted the importance of connecting with his roots. The show was streamed live from Lagos with permission from the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. James expressed gratitude for their understanding and support. He believes that social media has helped the fashion industry become more global, but the pandemic encouraged many designers, including him, to focus on local connections as well. Instead of being nostalgic about the past decade, James felt more confident. He overcame feelings of impostor syndrome by successfully running his label on his own terms. This anniversary motivated him to explore what his customers love, like tailored pieces and leather outerwear, while also experimenting with new styles. He humorously mentioned that his brand is entering a "fairytale princess era." One of the standout pieces from the collection is a sheer black dress adorned with lace and sequins. James explained that he has developed a new appreciation for the color black, enjoying its timelessness. He noted that designing in black presents its own challenges but also emphasizes the fit and craftsmanship of the clothing. Looking ahead, James is planning to establish a headquarters in Lagos and is considering future shows in London or Paris. He sees the opportunity to redefine what "global" means, emphasizing a local-first approach to fashion.
