Tom Gleisner creates aged care musical "Bloom" in Australia
Tom Gleisner, known for his work in comedy and film, has taken on a new challenge by writing his first musical comedy, titled "Bloom." The show debuted in 2023 at the Melbourne Theatre Company and focuses on life in an aged care facility. Gleisner initially struggled with the constraints of stage productions. He reduced the cast from 32 to 10 people and learned that certain cinematic techniques, like “cutting to” scenes, do not translate to theater. Despite these challenges, he stayed true to what he knows: good storytelling, humor, and relatable characters. The musical centers on Pine Grove Aged Care, where residents work with a reluctant university student to combat budget cuts by the greedy owner, Mrs. MacIntyre. The cast features talents like Christie Whelan Browne and John Waters, along with seasoned performers. Gleisner was inspired to write "Bloom" after experiencing aged care through his family. He was intrigued by a Dutch nursing home that offered free board to students willing to work there. Although he initially considered making it a TV show or film, it evolved into a musical over time. Cast members express their excitement about performing together. They appreciate the wisdom and experience that the older actors bring to the stage. Gleisner acknowledges the challenges of promoting a new Australian musical, especially one set in an aged care home, but believes deeply in the project. "Bloom" addresses serious themes, including mortality, while retaining a humorous tone throughout. It aims to celebrate life and provoke thought about how society treats older adults. Gleisner hopes the audience leaves with a deeper understanding and empathy for aging individuals, rather than just as a source of humor. The show is set to run at the Roslyn Packer Theatre from March 29 to May 11, offering a unique blend of humor, music, and reflection on life in an aged care setting.
