Tornado causes significant damage in Gary, Indiana

A suspected tornado caused significant damage in Gary, Indiana, on March 19. The storm led to severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings in the area. Video taken by local resident Paul Goddard showed a downed light pole and stop sign. It also revealed damaged roofs and debris scattered on the ground near Wallace Street and W 21st Avenue. Officials in Gary reported that residents spotted a funnel cloud in the area. There was significant wind damage to many buildings. Some areas experienced flooding, and numerous trees and branches were knocked down throughout the region. Local crews are currently clearing debris and helping affected neighborhoods. The City of Gary has advised residents to be cautious, as strong winds are expected to continue later in the evening.
