Townhouse fire in Guelph kills one, injures another
A fire in Guelph on Wednesday morning resulted in one death and left another person seriously injured. The incident took place at a townhouse on Sunset Road. Firefighters arrived shortly before 7 a.m. after receiving multiple calls. Two residents had escaped the burning building, but two others were trapped inside. One victim was found in the basement and later pronounced dead. The other was located on the first floor and was taken to Guelph General Hospital for treatment. During the rescue efforts, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames at the front door. Five fire stations responded to the emergency, and a dog was also rescued from the townhouse. The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. They will check if smoke alarms were working on every level of the home. The Guelph Fire Department urges all home and property owners to ensure their smoke alarms are functional. They recommend testing alarms monthly, changing batteries yearly, and replacing smoke alarms that are over ten years old. Residents are also encouraged to have an escape plan in case of fire.
