Trade unions to strike nationwide on May 20, 2025
Ten central trade unions in India have called for a nationwide strike on May 20, 2025. This decision was made during a national convention of workers held on Tuesday. The unions want the government to scrap four new labor codes, which they claim hurt workers and favor corporations. The unions involved include AITUC, HMS, CITU, INTUC, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC. They did not include the RSS-affiliated Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh. In a joint statement, they announced a two-month campaign leading up to the strike. The unions emphasize that these labor codes must be halted. They believe the struggle against these codes is critical for achieving workers’ rights and improving working conditions. They also encourage all workers to participate in the strike. Additional demands from the unions include increasing funding for employment guarantee schemes and raising the number of workdays from 100 to 200. They also want the new pension scheme to be abolished.
