Transport Canada reviews Tesla's massive rebate claims surge
Transport Canada is currently reviewing a significant increase in rebate claims made by Tesla, amounting to a 1,900% rise over the final weekend of a federal subsidy program in January. The department has not confirmed whether the $43 million claimed by Tesla has been paid out. This surge has raised concerns as it comes amid ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States. Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, has been criticized by Canadians, especially after remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting Canada should become a U.S. state. Tesla has received over $713 million in Canadian EV rebates historically. The recent spike in claims has caused frustration among 226 independent Canadian car dealers who were left without reimbursement. These dealers had offered rebates to customers based on the remaining public funds. Former Transport Minister Anita Anand has not commented on the situation, nor has her successor, Chrystia Freeland. Transport Canada has stated it is looking into the claims, particularly for dealerships that missed the submission deadline. In response to these developments, Toronto Deputy Mayor Mike Colle has called for a thorough investigation into Tesla's rebate claims. Furthermore, the British Columbia government has suggested excluding Tesla from its rebate programs due to the company’s controversial standing in the public eye. Critics highlight that while Tesla benefits from government subsidies, Musk is often vocal about reducing government waste in the U.S. Protests have occurred at Tesla showrooms following Trump's purchase of a Tesla and comments about government spending. Meanwhile, Tesla's share prices and sales have fluctuated globally, largely influenced by changes in rebate programs and pricing adjustments in various markets.
