Treasury Square market in Aizawl permanently closes
The Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced on Wednesday that the Treasury Square open market will close permanently. This decision follows a fire on March 17 that destroyed 64 makeshift shops in the market. The affected vendors will be moved to the AMC Multi-Complex in Tuikual South. After the fire, confrontations occurred between vendors and law enforcement. Many vendors tried to continue selling in the area, despite safety concerns and authorities blocking off the market. The fire caused significant damage, including to the PAMRA Office and nearby structures. AMC expressed sadness for the victims of the fire and emphasized the importance of safety. Following inspections, officials decided to permanently close the market to prevent future incidents. The deputy commissioner, leading the district's disaster management team, issued the closure order, citing public safety concerns. Treasury Square has had a history of accidents, including fires and explosions, which have threatened lives. The AMC noted that the area has also become a site for drug-related activities, raising further safety issues. The fire came dangerously close to the legislative assembly, with quick action from emergency services preventing more extensive harm. AMC pointed to the Street Vendors Act of 2014, which restricts vending near sensitive areas. Given the risks to important state buildings, the AMC deemed the relocation of the vendors necessary.
