Trial for deputy accused of shooting may be relocated
A cousin of Sonya Massey believes it could help if the trial for Sean P. Grayson, a former deputy charged with her murder, is moved out of Sangamon County. Sontae Massey spoke to reporters after a hearing on March 24. He said the family expected Grayson’s lawyers to request a change of venue due to the attention the case has received. The motion to move the trial will be discussed by Judge Ryan Cadagin on April 8. Massey noted that moving the trial might prevent claims of unfairness from the defense. He expressed his strong belief in Grayson's guilt. Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman and mother, was shot by Grayson in her home last July. The incident, which was recorded on a police body camera, has drawn widespread attention. Teresa Haley, a friend of the Massey family, said the family seeks justice, regardless of where the trial occurs. Grayson appeared in court via Zoom while still in jail. Many family members, including Sonya’s mother, were present at the hearing. Sontae Massey mentioned that the family plans to be more involved with the Massey Commission, which is working to implement recommendations following her death. He expressed cautious optimism about the commission's efforts to include the family's voice in its decisions. Sontae emphasized the importance of family unity and demonstrating solidarity in the community.
