Tribal groups protest flyover in Ranchi, Jharkhand

Tribal groups in Ranchi, Jharkhand, organized an 18-hour bandh on March 22, 2025, to protest the construction of a flyover near the Sarna Sthal, an important site for tribal worship. Activists blocked roads and burned tires in different areas of the city, including Titla Chowk and Kanke Chowk. The protesters claim the construction of a ramp in Siram Toli will block access to the site and disrupt its spiritual importance, especially during the Sarhul festival when many tribal people gather there. They accuse the government of ignoring their concerns. In response to the protests, Ranchi police prepared for potential disruptions. The district administration called for peaceful actions and warned against causing problems for traffic, students, or the public. The elevated road project, expected to improve traffic flow between Siram Toli and Mecon, is 2.34 kilometers long and was initiated in August 2022. It includes a 132-meter stretch over a railway line and costs ₹340 crores.
