Tribal protests disrupt Ranchi over flyover construction
Activists from various tribal groups protested in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on Saturday. They aimed to enforce an 18-hour bandh against the building of a flyover near Sarna Sthal, a sacred site for tribals. Protesters burned tires and blocked several roads, particularly on the city's outskirts. The Ranchi-Lohardaga road was blocked at Titla Chowk. Demonstrators also gathered in Kanke Chowk and other local areas to support the bandh. There were noticeably fewer cars on the streets during the morning. The activists argue that the construction of a ramp in Siram Toli will hinder access to their religious site, especially during large gatherings like the Sarhul festival. On Friday evening, tribal organizations held a torchlight rally to raise awareness and gather support for the bandh. Protesters claimed the government ignored their worries about the flyover's impact. They expressed that it could disrupt access when thousands of tribals visit the Sarna Sthal. In response to the protest, Ranchi police increased security measures. Officials urged protestors to remain peaceful and avoid causing disruptions. The district administration gave clear instructions to prevent obstruction of traffic, especially for students and important visitors. The flyover project is a 2.34-kilometer elevated road meant to improve traffic flow and connect Siram Toli to Mecon. Launched in August 2022, the project is expected to cost ₹340 crore, according to officials.
