Tropical storm Nika strengthens, more areas in the Philippines under Signal No. 1

Tropical cyclone Nika has strengthened into a tropical storm, prompting more areas to be placed under Signal No. 1. Nika now has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h and is moving westward at 35 km/h. Signal No. 1 is in effect for parts of Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and northeastern Albay. Heavy rainfall is expected, with forecasts indicating up to 200 mm in some areas. Nika is expected to reach severe tropical storm status by Monday morning before making landfall in Isabela or Aurora. It may weaken as it interacts with the terrain of Luzon.
