Tropical storm Rafael expected to strengthen into hurricane, likely hitting Cuba this week
A new tropical storm is forming in the Caribbean and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane, likely hitting western Cuba on Wednesday. The storm, named Rafael, will bring heavy rain to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for Jamaica, while a hurricane watch is issued for the Cayman Islands and several provinces in Cuba. The storm could produce 3 to 6 inches of rain, with localized areas receiving up to 9 inches.
The Cayman Islands government is providing sandbags and closing schools in preparation. Heavy rainfall has already caused landslides in Jamaica, isolating some communities. Flooding and mudslides are possible as the storm approaches.
