Tropical Storm Rafael forms in Caribbean, set to strengthen into hurricane
Tropical Storm Rafael formed in the Caribbean on Monday and is expected to become a hurricane by Tuesday. It is currently about 175 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica, with winds of 45 mph, moving north at 9 mph.
A tropical storm watch has been issued for the lower and middle Florida Keys and the Dry Tortugas. The Cayman Islands are under a hurricane warning, while Jamaica has a tropical storm warning. Cuba has issued a hurricane watch for several provinces.
Rafael is forecast to bring heavy rainfall, with 3 to 6 inches expected across the western Caribbean. Flooding and mudslides are possible in Jamaica and Cuba. The storm is projected to approach the U.S. later this week.
