Tropical Storm Rafael strengthens in Caribbean and approaches Cuba
Tropical Storm Rafael has intensified in the Caribbean and is expected to reach hurricane strength on Wednesday. It poses risks of damaging winds and heavy rainfall, particularly for Jamaica and western Cuba, which are already recovering from recent storms. As Rafael approaches the US Gulf coast, it is forecasted to weaken. Portions of the Florida Keys may experience tropical storm conditions starting Wednesday night, with potential storm surges of 1-3 feet in some areas. Historically, November hurricanes are rare in the Gulf states. Records show that Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas have not seen a hurricane make landfall in November since 1861. Rafael is the 17th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
