Trump administration funds Michigan's Palisades nuclear project
The Trump administration has released $56.7 million from a $1.52 billion loan approved under the Biden administration to help reopen the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan. This is the second disbursement for Holtec International under the loan agreement. Holtec plans to restart the 800-megawatt plant this fall and aims to add two small modular reactors nearby. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has stated that returning uranium fuel to the plant will have no significant environmental impact. The loan was part of a broader effort supported by Michigan Democrats to revive the plant, which has bipartisan backing. The restart is seen as a step towards increasing domestic nuclear energy production.
