Trump administration plans major EPA scientist layoffs
The Trump administration is planning to lay off hundreds of scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This decision would eliminate the EPA's scientific research branch, which employs more than 1,500 people. Lawmakers expressed concern about these cuts on Tuesday. They warned that most of the employees in the research arm may not be retained. The remaining positions could be reassigned to different parts of the agency. These layoffs align with President Donald Trump's goal of reducing government spending and workforce size. In February, Trump mentioned that EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin aims to cut about 65 percent of the EPA's total staff, which is around 17,000 people. EPA spokesperson Molly Vaseli said the agency plans to make "exciting steps" for organizational improvements. She emphasized their commitment to providing clean air, water, and land. Vaseli mentioned that while decisions haven't been finalized, they are seeking employee feedback on improving efficiency. Democratic lawmakers have criticized the proposed cuts. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren stated that without scientific research, the EPA cannot effectively protect public health and the environment. She added that past actions under Trump have undermined science, and this move could harm it further.
