Trump and Putin oppose Iran's nuclear weapons capabilities
Former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are in agreement about Iran's nuclear weapons program. They both believe that Iran should not have the capability to destroy Israel. This was confirmed by the White House after their phone call on March 18, 2025. During the call, Trump and Putin discussed various issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine. They talked about the Middle East as a region where cooperation could help prevent future conflicts. The leaders emphasized the importance of stopping the spread of strategic weapons, especially regarding Iran. At the same time, Russia is asking the United States to ease its sanctions on Iran. These sanctions have heavily impacted Iran's economy. Russian representatives recently met with counterparts from China and Iran in Beijing. They called for renewed nuclear discussions and emphasized the need for respectful political dialogue with the U.S. Iran has been providing military support to Russia during the Ukraine war, including drone technology. This relationship has raised concerns, particularly around Iran's potential development of nuclear arms. In February, Trump noted that he believed Iran was close to achieving this goal and reinstated a "maximum pressure" campaign against the country. Trump has also expressed hope for a nuclear agreement with Iran. He recently sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader, urging for negotiations. He stated that if negotiations do not succeed, military action might be considered, but he prefers a diplomatic solution.
