Trump backs bill to limit federal judges' powers
President Donald Trump is supporting a new bill by Rep. Darrell Issa. This bill aims to prevent lower-level federal judges from issuing nationwide injunctions. Sources say Trump believes this issue is urgent and wants Congress to act quickly. Several U.S. district court judges have recently blocked over a dozen of Trump’s executive orders. The proposed legislation would limit the power of these judges to halt Trump’s policies across the entire country. Currently, judges can issue broad rulings that affect nationwide policies, a situation that Trump’s team argues undermines executive authority. The bill has already passed through the House Judiciary Committee. Chairman Jim Jordan expressed support and hope to advance it further in the legislative process. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has publicly criticized district judges' power to influence national policies. There is some division within the Republican Party regarding how to handle judges seen as "activists." For example, Rep. Brandon Gill has introduced a resolution to impeach U.S. District Judge James Boasberg. Boasberg ordered a temporary halt to deportations related to a specific gang. Trump also called for Boasberg's impeachment but some party leaders are cautious about pursuing such measures. Speaker Mike Johnson is reviewing all options to respond to the threat posed by activist judges. He emphasized the need to uphold the rule of law and separate powers in the government. The Senate has not yet indicated whether it will take on Issa's bill.
