Trump deploys Navy warship for southern border security
President Donald Trump has decided to deploy a Navy warship to the U.S. southern border to support military operations there. An expert believes this is a wise move, saying it sends a strong message to anyone thinking of crossing into the U.S. by sea. Tom Homan, a former high-ranking official, defended Trump's decision to use a law from 1798, stating that the U.S. Constitution is also old but respected. The USS Gravely, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, has been assigned to this mission. It aims to enhance border security against threats like drug smuggling and unauthorized immigration. General Gregory Guillot of U.S. Northern Command stated that the ship's abilities will help protect America's territorial integrity and security. The USS Gravely has already set sail from Virginia and will patrol the Gulf of Mexico. Pentagon officials emphasized that controlling both land and sea is crucial for national security. The Navy's involvement aims to strengthen current efforts led by the U.S. Coast Guard. Expert Alfonso Aguilar pointed out that the Navy’s deployment is a way to discourage illegal sea crossings. He noted that land forces have helped reduce illegal crossings and that addressing sea routes is the next logical step. Overall, the deployment reflects a strategy to increase border security through both land and maritime operations.
