Trump signs order to withdraw US from World Health Organization
On his first day back in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the U.S. from the World Health Organization (WHO). This decision follows criticism of the WHO's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its perceived political influences. If the withdrawal proceeds, the U.S. will become the only major country outside the 194-member organization. The U.S. has been a key financial supporter, contributing about 18% of the WHO's budget, which could significantly impact the agency's operations. Trump's order also halts U.S. negotiations on a pandemic agreement aimed at improving global health responses. This move marks a continuation of Trump's previous attempts to exit the WHO, which were halted by President Biden in 2021.
