Trump suggests U.S. should regain control of Panama Canal citing concerns over trade and China's influence
President-elect Donald Trump has suggested the U.S. should regain control of the Panama Canal, citing unfair treatment of American ships and concerns over China's influence. This marks a shift from the current arrangement where Panama operates the canal. The Panama Canal, an 80-kilometer waterway, is managed by the Panama Canal Authority. It is considered an "inalienable heritage" of Panama, with the U.S. being the largest user, accounting for 74% of traffic. The canal, which opened in 1914, was transferred to Panama in 1999 under treaties signed by U.S. President Jimmy Carter. It plays a crucial role in global trade, with 5% of world maritime traffic passing through it, generating significant revenue for Panama.
