Trump threatens to reclaim control of Panama Canal over fees and security concerns

President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to demand the return of the Panama Canal to U.S. control, criticizing what he calls "unfair fees" for American ships. He expressed concern over China's influence in the region. Trump stated that the canal should be managed solely by Panama, not by China or any other country. He claimed that if Panama cannot ensure the canal's secure operation, the U.S. will seek full control. The Panama Canal, returned to Panama in 1999, is vital for U.S. trade, with about five percent of global maritime traffic passing through it. The canal recently reported record revenues of nearly $5 billion.
