Trust your instincts; advocate for your health
Amy Carswell, a 47-year-old mother from Wicklow, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 after noticing changes in her left breast. Initially, she felt relief after undergoing tests that showed she likely had a cyst. However, her concerns persisted, prompting her to seek further evaluations. Her persistence led to a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) after more tests, including biopsies. Amy’s treatment journey began in April 2022 with chemotherapy, which she described as challenging. She experienced significant side effects, including weight loss and nausea. During this time, she found emotional support from a psych-oncology team and chose to be honest with her children about her condition. After completing chemotherapy and undergoing a mastectomy with reconstruction, Amy returned to work in April 2023. Although she faced long-term effects from treatment, including early menopause and complications from radiation therapy, she remained grateful for the support from her family, friends, and workplace. As the Irish Cancer Society's Daffodil Day approaches, Amy is advocating for increased awareness about breast cancer. She emphasizes the importance of understanding changes in one’s body and encourages others to trust their instincts when seeking medical help. Amy believes that continued research and support for cancer patients are vital for improving treatment outcomes.
