TSMC begins 2nm wafer orders in April 2025
TSMC is set to begin taking orders for its new 2nm chip production process in April. The company will hold an expansion ceremony for its Kaohsiung wafer fab at the end of March. Apple will be the first customer, planning to use the 2nm-based A20 chip in its upcoming iPhone 18 series, expected to launch next year. The 2nm process is one of the most advanced in the world. It features new transistor technology called gate-all-around (GAA), which improves performance, efficiency, and the number of transistors on a chip. TSMC has achieved over 60% yield in trial production, and mass production is expected to start soon. Once fully operational, TSMC’s production capacity for 2nm wafers is projected to reach 50,000 units per month by the end of 2025. The A20 chip is anticipated to offer a 15% performance boost compared to the current 3nm technology used in Apple's A19 chip for this year's iPhone 17 series. Major tech companies like AMD, Intel, Broadcom, and AWS are also interested in TSMC's 2nm capabilities. Analysts predict a steady growth in the semiconductor market in 2025, driven by increasing demand for AI technologies. TSMC’s strong position in advanced manufacturing is expected to increase its market share to 37% by that year.
