The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is taking action to protect civet cats. These animals are important because their oil is used in a sacred ritual for Lord Venkateswara. To support this conservation effort, TTD has proposed a budget of Rs 1.97 crore to develop habitats for civet cats. The TTD has asked the state government for permission to build cave-like structures and put up signboards. They also plan to create bat habitats and improve the overall environment for civet cats. The government has agreed to support TTD’s proposals. Civet oil is an essential part of the abhishekam ritual. Chief priest Krishna Seshachala Dikshitulu explained that the oil is prepared by mixing oil from civet cats with sesame oil. This mixture is warmed and used in the rituals. It enhances the ceremonial lighting and the appearance of the deity during worship. Currently, there are only four civet cats at the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park. Curator Selvam mentioned that they are working to increase the number of these animals in the future. The TTD’s actions show their dedication to preserving traditional religious practices. As the chief priest noted, conserving civet cats is crucial to ensure that the oil remains available for important rituals at the Srivari Temple.
