Twerton faces poverty, mold, and rising gang activity
The Royal Crescent in Bath is known for its beautiful Georgian architecture and is popular among tourists. However, just a couple of miles away is Twerton, a neighborhood facing severe poverty and housing issues. Recent statistics show that over 62% of residents in Twerton live in poverty, with significant health risks from mould in many homes. Locals in Twerton are frustrated with their living conditions. Many report serious mould problems in their homes, leading to health issues like bronchitis. Despite ongoing complaints to housing authorities, residents feel their concerns are often ignored. One local described the situation as "disgusting" and said constant attempts to clean and repaint were futile. The area also struggles with crime. There have been various incidents involving drug dealers, with a high-profile case revealing a gangster smuggling cocaine disguised as designer items. Local residents speak of a community grappling with drug-related issues and a lack of activities for young people. Despite these challenges, Twerton has a strong community spirit. There are local shops, community centers, and sports activities, including a football club. Some residents remain hopeful for improvements, but many believe drastic changes are needed to address the ongoing problems. Curo Housing Association, which manages many homes in the area, acknowledged the issues and promised to work on the mould problem. Officials from Bath and North East Somerset Council and the police have been approached for comments on local safety and living conditions. However, residents continue to express their concerns about the divide between affluent areas of Bath and their own, struggling community.
