Two gang members deported to El Salvador prison
Two suspected gang members from the Tren de Aragua have been deported to a dangerous prison in El Salvador. Carlos Chivico Medina, 24, and Miguel Vaamondes Barrios, 42, were arrested by the NYPD but had their deportation facilitated despite New York City's sanctuary laws. Medina was arrested in November during a drug bust. Barrios was caught in a raid on a Bronx apartment filled with weapons and drugs in April. Both men were part of a larger group deported under the Alien Enemies Act, which President Trump had used to target members of the violent gang. It is unclear how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took custody of them, as city laws limit the sharing of information with federal authorities. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson did not respond to inquiries. The Trump administration had previously deported 260 migrants to El Salvador's prison, where they were seen shackled on video. Barrios faced multiple charges related to weapons and drugs, and Medina was among 15 gang members arrested in a police operation. Other individuals deported included those charged with serious offenses in different states, raising legal challenges. A judge recently ordered an end to the use of the Alien Enemies Act for deportations, a law historically used during World War II.
