Two killed in Lake Ontario boat crash
Passengers Megan Wu, 24, and Julio Abrantes, 34, lost their lives when a boat crashed into the shore at Tommy Thompson Park in Lake Ontario. This happened almost three years ago. A trial is currently taking place to determine who was driving the boat during the incident. Two women who were on the boat described a chaotic drinking party involving several boats the night of the crash. They shared their experiences in court, explaining how their boat sped up suddenly and flipped over as they approached the shore. The boat crashed near a rock wall, and eight passengers managed to swim to safety. Sadly, Wu and Abrantes did not survive. Filip Grkovski, 41, is accused of being the driver of the boat at the time of the crash. He faces multiple charges, including criminal negligence and impaired driving causing death. Witnesses testified that there was heavy drinking during the party, but details about Grkovski's drinking while driving are unclear. One witness, Andrea Miguel, mentioned she saw Grkovski drinking throughout the day. However, she could not confirm if he was drinking when operating the boat. She became uncomfortable as the party went on and tried to call for help before they headed back to shore. As the boat approached the shore, Miguel felt a sudden acceleration followed by a series of bumps before the boat flipped. She described being submerged in dark water, eventually managing to swim to safety. Another passenger, Kristina Vasilyeva, couldn't recall who was driving at the time of the crash but noted that both Grkovski and another man took turns at the wheel. The trial, which is being overseen by Superior Court Justice Tamara Sugunasiri, will continue on Thursday.
