Two killed, over 900 speeding fines issued in Ireland
During the recent St Patrick’s weekend, two people died in traffic incidents. Eight others suffered serious injuries over the bank holiday period. The Gardaí (Irish police) reported these figures after a road safety campaign that ran from March 13th to March 17th. The campaign included over 1,000 checkpoints for mandatory intoxication testing. Authorities conducted nearly 5,000 breath tests and 190 oral fluid tests. As a result, 214 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Speeding was another major concern during the holiday. About 2,650 drivers were caught exceeding speed limits. Some of the most alarming violations included a driver going 124 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Many vehicles were seized, especially from learner drivers. Of the 500 seized cars, 95 belonged to unaccompanied learner permit holders, while 425 had no tax or insurance. Gardaí urge all drivers to avoid alcohol and drugs when driving, obey speed limits, and always wear seat belts. They emphasize the importance of being alert on the road to ensure safety for everyone.
